My partner and I are arguingabout an upcoming trip. I want to fly VA, she wants to fly Emirates. Which do you think are the pro's and cons of each airline. What is the standard of service etc - I know the VA seats win hands down.

Hi Badlynx,
You could have asked an easy question. Emirates v VS.

Where are you departing from? And where are you going too?
Lots of various factors, prices etc, what fare? so give us a few more clues and we will try and help.

Silly me. Looking at Melbourne/Sydney to Heathrow. Price wise there is about $600 difference (Emirates being cheaper at $6600) Personally I have narrowed it down to better food service on Emirates and served course by course with a dessert trolley, chauffeur service and a more direct flight from melb.Lounge wise Emirates is rubbish in London, good in Melb (Cathay Pacific lounge) and ok but overcrowded and needing an update in Dubai.
VA has much better seats, good lounges (chauffeur service not avail on fare offered), food(??-read conflicting reports along with indifferent service). Trying to be impartial for the g/f and present both sides but interested in what others think.

In my opinion, In this instance I would choose.............Emirates.

Why- More direct routing, better food and possibly better service from FA, although VS crew are excellent 90% of the time, and you get airport transfer by limo. Also you have $600 in your pocket to treat yourself:Dor the G/F
The main reason though is that your G/F wants to fly Emirates and if VS is not up to standard it will be all your fault:D;)

I am sure a few of the more seasoned v-flyers can add their 2p's worth.

Are miles and tier points important to you? Have either you or your gf flown on either before? These might swing it, otherwise I'm tempted to agree with Iain and suggest you do the chivalrous thing (and hope Emirates doesn't disappoint you). One thing I might add - all airline crews have good and bad days, usually good. I've taken 18 flights on Virgin this year, mostly in UC and without fail the crew, their attitude and the service has been the best thing about the trip (well, that and the club house, the cocktails, the beds, Vport ...).

Hard choice! [?][?][?]

spoken like a true married man [y][^]...btw I agree,if your flights on Emirates turn out to be just ok then you can pull the "we should off flown VS" line, alot better than the other way around.

Personally I dont think I would pay to fly biz class on Emirates - there seems to be no consistency in their fleet.

For the MEL-DXB trip you'll get an A345 with a 2-2-2 biz class config, and sloping beds. pretty good.

However, from DXB-LHR/LGW you'll get either a 777 with a 2-3-2 config, with reclining seats (nb a middle seat in biz class - yuk!) or, on the A333 a 2-3-2 config in biz (which has the same seat width as PE on VS!).

I'd opt for Upper Class on VS for these reasons.

I'd also go with VS. Emirates J class is really a class that they have left behind and it still doesn't have flat beds in J.

If you serach some of the airline web sites, Emirates have also been getting poor ratings for declining inflight service over the last few months as well.
