Me too, happy memories as a schoolboy going to Heathrow and getting on a Viscount to Malta, then following year getting on the Comet. Oh it was sooooo fast and felt so futuristic. We had a night flight and it felt very high up looking down on the Alps as we crossed.
In very early days that I was too young to remember it took us five days to fly out to Karachi.
I still enjoy travel and try to make it special. It takes us 3 days to get to South Carolina.
Day1 Taxi to Gatwick Hilton. Even though it's only 40 miles I like to cover as many 'what if's as possible.'
Day2 Fly to MCO and drop into the Hyatt Regency on airport.
Day3 Pick up car and drive up to South Carolina.
All booked up for next March.

I recently read "Up in the air" by Betty Riegel. Easy reading, not great literature, but a fascinating account of training as a Pan Am flight attendant in the 1950s and 60s when they cooked from scratch in the galley umpteen course meals and then presented them silver service. Worth the read just to go all misty-eyed and wish one had experienced that sort of flight.
