My first trip report so please be kind! This was very quickly written and hasn't been edited so apologies for any/all mistakes. :D

The apprehension she felt had been building over the past few days but at least it would soon be over. She glanced at her son, fast asleep in one of the beds in the room, before walking over to the window and pushing the curtain aside. They’d travelled up to Gatwick Airport by taxi that evening and had something to eat in the terminal building before making their way back to the Hilton where they were spending the night. It was now completely dark outside and the clear skies allowed a perfect view of the aircraft coming in to land. She watched them for a while before going to bed, the next day was going to be a long one and she needed to rest.
She’d surprised herself by managing to get a few hours sleep despite the constant swirling of information in her head, and they were up early and in the terminal by 8am. It was busier than it had been the night before but she knew where she was going this time so the crowds didn’t bother her. All the Upper Class check in desks were busy so she waited for the next one to become available, trying not to let her nervousness show. Any minute she expected to feel a hand on her shoulder indicating that she’d been discovered and her trip to meet her contact wouldn’t go ahead. It didn’t happen though and after a short wait a desk became available and she checked in their bags and breathing a sigh of relief, they went in search of the lounge that she’d heard so much about.
After presenting their boarding passes at reception they were greeted warmly and, on discovering this was their first visit, the receptionist escorted them into lounge pointing out all the amenities before leaving them to settle in. The first order of business according to her son, was to find out what was available by way of entertainment. More specifically, did they have a games console. He was thrilled to find they had an xbox and he promptly took up residence in front of it allowing her to get down to the business of ordering breakfast. After she’d ordered she took a little time to look around at the other patrons. It didn’t seem too busy and she was pleased to see that not everyone there looked as if they’d just stepped out of the pages of Vogue. She also spotted a well-known football pundit sat just a couple of seats away and he gave her a smile before returning his attention to his own breakfast.
The hours passed quickly and hating to leave things until the last minute she dragged her son away from his game and they made their way to the gate. She’d been wondering what she would do if there was a line when she got there. Would she go to the front or just take her place in line and keep her head down? It wasn’t a decision she had to make as when she arrived there was a clearly marked priority line and, as soon as she’d shown their boarding passes, they were told to make their way directly onto the aircraft. At this point she was practically holding her breath. She’d heard so much about this, had been looking forward to it so much, that she felt almost giddy.
After once again showing their boarding cards to the stewardess at the door, they were waved off to the left and through the PE cabin to UC. Her smile slipped a bit when they got there. She wasn’t sure what she’d been expecting exactly, but at the very least it was that someone would be there to greet her but the cabin was empty. She already knew which seats were theirs so they made their way to 6a & k. Unfortunately sitting down was not an option as there was a crew bag on her seat and a crew jacket on her sons. Telling her son to hang on, she put their cabin bags in an overhead bin and went in search of a member of cabin crew to ask them to remove the items. Finding a crew member in the galley, a polite request was made to a very unapologetic and brusque crew member who promptly removed them.
Maybe they’d figured it out? Maybe they realised that her façade of being a reasonably successfully writer was all just a cover for something else? The fact that she was a common as muck single mother who had no business being in UC in the first place?
Other travellers started to file into the cabin and at this point drinks were offered and they settled down in their seats. Although she had a child herself, her heart fell when the last three seats in the cabin were taken by a couple and their two children. One was under two and the other was clearly not that much older. It fell even further when rather than sitting with an adult on each side and the kids between them, they decided to put the kids in the seat next to her. She crossed her fingers and hoped that they would behave though she wasn’t overly hopeful.
Not long after they reached cruising altitude her concerns were realised. The parents had clearly been feeding their offspring blue M&M’s before take-off and the toddler started running rampant through the cabin and the baby started screaming. A surreptitious glance at the other passengers confirmed that her tolerance level was not unduly low as several of them were casting sharp glances at the parents clearly hoping as she was, that they would deign to do some parenting. Unfortunately it was not to be as they were clearly under the mistaken impression that the cabin was a crèche facility and someone else would be responsible for their darling offspring.
After dinner, which was not great but not bad for airline food, being watched throughout by the toddler peering over the top of the partition, she settled down to watch a movie hoping to drown out some of the noise. Unfortunately, Virgin had other plans and the audio wasn’t working.
Apart from the dinner service the cabin crew had been as rare a sight as a Dodo bird so she set off to track someone down. Finding them in the galley she explained the problem. Left in no doubt that she was interrupting an important conversation on the latest breakthrough in quantum physics, she was handed a new headset and told to ‘try that’. Headset in hand she once again tried to make the audio work, to no avail. Three trips to the galley and three headsets later a member of crew finally came over to look for herself before confirming that she was not in fact an idiot, and it wasn’t working. No apology on behalf of VA was forthcoming and she was handed a dvd player a list of films to choose from. After another trip to the galley to get a battery as the one in the player was flat, she finally settled down to watch a movie.
She couldn’t concentrate though as irritation was bubbling away inside. Since coming on board she’d been left hugely disappointed. Quite apart from the screaming child and the failure of the entertainment system, there had been no cabin crew presence at all. No one had offered her a smile let alone a drink and she’d been made to feel as if she was being unreasonable when trying to get assistance. Putting the dvd player down she went, once again, to the galley to find a member of crew. Once again interrupting a very important discussion, she raised the subject of airmiles and was told that someone would come and speak to her if she would return to her seat. She waited until about an hour before landing before raising the question again and was once again given the same advice. It was about 30 minutes before landing that a crew member asked her to write down her name and FC membership number and that she would be given some miles though again, no apology.
It was with some relief that she left the aircraft after landing and pleased that there was no queue at immigration, she was sat in her hire car 40 minutes after landing.
Now the important business started. She had to meet her contact, nothing could be allowed to get in the way of this. Checking her paperwork for his name she found it. Mickey Mouse.

First of all, thank you for your TR. Then I feel the need to apologise. On this site we all enthuse and build the hopes of first timers in UC and usually VS comes up trumps. But this time - well I almost feel it personally that you were so let down on so many fronts.

All I can say is, have a wonderful time with Mickey and I so hope your return flight lives up to expectations! :(

Oh dear, not what you would have expected from an UC crew, was there no FSM available. I would have sought them out and said what my feelings were. I think a letter to Crawley Towers mighty be in order, this is not the first trip report in the last few days to say how bad a crew were/are.

You expect a service along with the seat for any class. Hope you and your son enjoyed all the parks and had a good time. Hope for a better return flight.

Terrific tale telling, terrible tale told.

If you take the appalling behaviour of your fellow passengers out of the equation, do you think the experience would have felt better?

I would definitely recommend a letter to VS saying how let down you feel.

A brilliantly well written TR but what a shame the flight was so disappointing,
As we all know a great crew can really make a flight even when there are other things that have let you down , a letter to HQ me thinks

What a disappointment. As others have said, I would write a well scripted letter with all relevant details and explain your feelings.

That was just not acceptable for any class of flight !

I've experienced a little terror as well, who managed to suss out the button which changes the seat to a bed and decided it would be good fun to do laps round the cabin pressing ever seats button.

Luckily this time there was a crew member on hand to stop him before he "accidently" tripped over someone's foot ):

Hope the mouse makes up for a shoddy journey :)

Thank you for the TR. What a dreadful flight. Always ask to speak to the FSM and request a customer complaint form. They than know you are unhappy and should try to resolve the issues.

What a fantastically written TR. And an utterly appalling experience. With the others, I'm so very sorry that your first UC experience has been an awful one. Do, really do, write to Crawley Towers with details of how bad the crew were. They need to know about this and take action to sort out the crew and offer you shedloads of airmiles though no amount can atone for your ruined experience. You must have been anticipating this so very much and it's just not right.

Thanks for a super inaugural TR y) y)

I loved the way you told it as a tale - the wonderful experience in the Clubhouse followed by a lask lustre experience on board is of course one V Flyers have heard in the past v(

As hiljil has already said, it is embarassing when someone's first UC expecations have been crushed so cruelly by reality and I too feel responsible for building up hopes based on my own experience.

Do write to VS at Crawley - VS Management need to be aware that service standards are slipping and that the FSM needs to be reacquainted with what is to be expected.

I do hope your stay in Orlando made up for a dreadful VS Flight and your return was much better

Firstly, thanks for the TR which I enjoyed reading in the style you told it. Meeting "the contact" and the build up throughout, got my heart racing, I admit!

I assumed the narrator was a member of one of the intelligence services and was hoping they may have "dealt" with the disruptive influences in some ink stove way, though it was not to be. ;)

Secondly, I am sorry your first UC experience sounded like a flop. The crew sounded disinterested and were clearly unapologetic, which is unacceptable. Despite your recurrent feeling you were some sort of imposter, you had a seat and should have been treated with courtesy and respect, regardeless of whether you were a cash or rewards customer, regardless of cabin.

I am not one for writing complainted to compnay HQs but in this case I most certainly would.

I hope Orlando was all you hoped and that you had a good and safe trip home.

Thanks for taking the time to post the TR. I will admit when I started reading it, I thought the style of posting was somewhat unusual - but as I read on it all became clear it was being told as a story & an enjoyable read. If only the story was not true!

A letter to Crawley Towers is definitely in order on your return, as the crew working in Upper Class on that flight certainly need some re-training / a reminder of what is expected of them service-wise.

Until then, enjoy meeting "your contact" in Florida!

Brilliant trip report, thanks for posting. Such a shame your first UC experience was so much of a let down. Are you coming back UC as well? I've just had my third experience of upper and all have been great so I really hope your next one is up to scratch.

Aww AJC I am absolutely gutted for you, this is not what you would have expected, I hope you do write a complaint in!

Hope you hada great time in Orlando and hopefully the return was better?

AJC I'm really sorry to read about your 1st upper class experience. My 1st upper class flight was a truly memorable one but that was many years ago and no flight since has come close to matching the on board service on that one.

It is really disappointing how often poor or rude customer service by cabin crew is being being raised at the moment.

In a premium cabin with only 14 seats and a dedicated crew supposedly serving this cabin, how on earth can this kind of service be delivered, this is after all someone's job.

Like others, I complement you on the narrative style adopted for this TR - real nicely written.

The inconsistency strikes again - it's a real shame that you had to experience this on your first UC flight, I hope you get a personalised response from VS on this. I don't just mean a bunch of miles and a glib apology, they really ought to start taking notice of this and giving you some confidence that they will be taking actions.

Having just returned from the land of mouse, I'm very envious as it looks like you will get warmer weather than I did with my daughter! Hope you have a really great time.

And, odds are, you trip home will be a totally different level of service....

Do let us all know how it goes...

Thank you for a very different trip report, really enjoyed sharing your experience. So sad to hear that your first UC journey was so poor. Really hope that you contact Virgin. Very poor that Virgin's top level of product failed to deliver on this trip. Good luck

Amazing TR, so well written. Thank you for sharing.

What a disappointing experience! Definitely write to Crawley Towers as I'm sure they will value your feedback.

Thank you all for your kind comments. :P

I am already home and I'm pleased to report, the return trip was amazing. Everything I had hoped it would be, and more. The female cabin crew in our cabin went above and beyond and she was absolutely lovely. I have two more UC trips booked to NYC this year and, I must admit, after the first flight I was seriously reconsidering but I'm glad to say the balance has been restored. The force is once more in balance. :o)

I will write a trip report for that too but I actually do have a real deadline to hit for my next book and I really need to get BIC to get that done!

I did email Crawley Towers as many of you suggested but it's been three days now with no reply so it's not looking good!

Thanks for the trip report, got me worried about an upcoming trip in Upper but from the point of view of being in Upper with 3 little ones who can be a bit lively! I can see the disapproving looks now, hopefully will do a better job in keeping them busy/occupied and we have employed a strategy with putting 2 of them right at the front in the nose so that can see each other and hopefully we can stop them getting to the rest of the cabin/bar/premium/upstairs/cockpit etc!
I may have missed something but why did you give the seat 1 star? Dreaded 330?

I can only echo the above. It's a huge shame when any trip is this bad, let alone the first in UC. Having come back from the brink of an affair with BA myself, I can only hope VS makes your heart spin on your return journey.

Looking forward to the next instalment.

As a guide, my wife recently got 12,000 air miles awarded on the flight in UC when the seat motor wasn't working followed by a further 10,000 miles from VA HQ as a follow up - is that about right in everyone's eyes?

Sounds above parr to me - but then, I'd prefer them to get it right and ot have to hand out compensation....
