Earphones

I'll be flying UC to LHR from JFK next week, returning ten days later in PE to EWR. It seems to me that on my last Virgin flight the earphones supplied were weird little robin's egg blue things that I couldn't seem to keep on my head. What sort of earphones are being provided now? I'm wondering if I should bring along my own -- no, not fancy noise-cancelling ones, just some from AA. All information welcomed with a smile.

Flying UC from Gatwick to Orlando 2 weeks ago we were supplied with VA's own Noise Cancelling Headphones.

If I remember correctly, VS UC headphones, are labelled as having a 'noise cancellation system'. They have the two prongs on the jack but aren't battery powered.

Personally I take my own, it depends how much room you have in your carry on.

In Upper, as Nick says, you will receive the so-called "noise cancelling" headphones with two jacks at the end of the cable. (To be honest, they don't do *that* much, other than have a little red light on the side). The power for them comes from the IFE itself.

In PE on the way back (unless they've changed it this year), you'll get the plastic clip-on earphones that aren't linked. There's one for each ear, and the clip over the top of your ears to stay on. (Very weird looking, IMHO)

They are noise cancelling, just not very good at it. The second prong on the headphone jack supplies power, which is why (as Nick says) they don't need batteries. They won't touch QC2s (thought every v-flyer had at least one pair ), but they are as good as any of the cheap ones you might take onboard. I'd stick with the Virgin headphones if I were you.

I'm afraid they've done way with those nice headphones in the Amenity Pack in favour of ones that are marked "Property Of Virgin Atlantic" which are now collected at the end of the flight.

Take your own, Virgin's are OK for premium class but not a shade on Bose or Sennheiser NC earphones. Nor are they particularly comfortable nor give ace sound quality (actually Virgin could really take a lesson with this, why go proprietary when they should be going mass market!).

A great opportunity to revive the debate I was having with Paul on the VS020 about the headphones in UC.

I'm almost certain that on my recent flight back from MCO in UC the headphones were not noise cancelling and only had one connector (i.e. we had been given normal headphones) but Paul insisted that you get the same noise cancelling headphones on the Gatwick flights as any other [and i've noted what andrew.m.wright has said in the second post].

I'm happy to accept they might have just given out normal ones on that flight only, but if that can't be agreed it may come to fisticuffs [}:)]

I was under the impression that 2nd jack (2.5 mm jack) was used to power them, with the 3.5mm jack used for the audio

That's how they're normally configured.

Would love to see how they compare to my old Awia HP-CN5's,which BTW im more than happy with.For the price they cant be beat.

Does anyone have any ideas for headphones for young (3-4YO) children. The ones supplied are just not adjustable to that small a head.
