I have to say, even though I agree it is more about immigration than terrorism, the rule still seems silly to me. Can illegal immigrants not fund short term purchases of fully refundable tickets? And in these days of e-tickets, which are hardly the most secure and fraud-free documents[:w], exactly what does a return ticket really signify. And why not just fly to, say, Mexico and walk across - you don't need to show a return ticket crossing the boarder on foot.

Not quite that easy to get in from Mexico anymore.

You now need to have a passport to get back in,as a Mexico resisdent you need to have a visa to get into the country and trust me they do take this seriously at the TJ border crossing, having spent a couple of hrs chatting to them after I forgot my green card one night/morning.

All correct of course, but you still don't need a return air ticket. So if you have a valid passport from a VWP country.

However a little OT I guess

I guess the cheap ticket out of the USA would be a train or bus ticket from NYC to YYZ. Or the Seattle ferry to Victora but then you have to have whatever Canada wants.

You can buy a US ticket except that the problem is that on the VS website, the credit card address defaults to USA if the ticket origin is the the US. So when you try and buy the ticket, the validation fails. Reservations can override this though so it's not really a huge problem. Just needs a phone call to 1 800 872 8721.

The US VS number is 1 800 862 8621. 1 800 872 8721 is a fax number, maybe VS.
