Starting to enter the 'giddy zone' ahead of our flight - VS001 - on Friday. Considering the apparent hit-and-miss nature of UC grub at the moment, can anyone recommend a choice that won't offend the palate too much?

From my BOS flight last weekend, here's my recommendations:

VS1 has the same menu as the VS11, but with the addition of lighter bites/hot snacks - not sure why the VS1, 9 and 17 "get lucky" with the expanded menu, wish all the flights could offer it.

The salad with chicken (appetiser) is nice, I thought the salmon and hake with "paella" (read "shrimp rice") was enjoyable (though the salmon was dried out - like Decker's - I guess they really need different cooking/reheating times), the white chocolate bread and butter pudding was okay, and ice cream is ice cream!

The vegetarian "vol-au-vent" with ricotta and roasted veggies looks like vomit and was pronounced as "bad" my by girlfriend on our recent trip.

Cheers,
Mike

My usual choice is to eat in the Clubhouse, then look at the menu when i am onboard. You can ask for the onboard menu in the Clubhouse, but its not always the right one.

There is usually a bounty of lovely food in the CH, and cooked fresh and to order. The only downside is that you fool yourself into thinking that you'll only have a light bite onboard - then you end up chowing through half of the menu!!

Thanks Mike. Saw your pic of the fishy 'ensemble' - looks rather nice.

My better half had a similar experience to your girlfriend when she went for the goat's cheese tart on our way to BGI last year. A bit like sick in a pastry case apparently.

Is there a steak or chicken dish on the menu?

No. Lamb suet pudding, fishy rice, or "puke in a pastry shell".

(We used to get four main meal choices in J, didn't we?)

I'd go with Sarah, eating in the CH may be a better plan if none of the inflight offerings sound tempting.

Cheers,
Mike

Im sure we did! It would be nice to see a little more choice and variety on the menu, and personally speaking, always having a chicken dish as a main choice! :)

Admittedly, if i had that menu i wouldnt be impressed.

mdvipond - The full menu can be found here in Deckers (fab) Trip Report for the VS001 which you might find helpful?.

Also, don't forget it's the Freedom. Eat what you want, when you want. So don't be afraid to ask to mix things up a bit, I have on previous flights.

I'm sure the crew would be happy to make recommendations on whats good.

After reading the menu, i realise now that i had that on the VS023 LOL

I went for the light bite: Chicken & Mushroom pie, which was lovely - but very small! and the Chocolate Bread and Butter pudding, which was very yummy, and not too heavy. I also had the Shiraz, which went down rather nicely!

I ate my fill in the Clubhouse by having breakfast, then having the Club sandwich before boarding! Glad i did, as i wouldnt have eaten any of the main meal choices.

Thanks for the link to the menu. Pretty odd selection, isn't it? Might have to stock up in the CH as suggested (however, I'll still probably be foolish enough to go for the suet pudding on the plane and end up feeling like death half way over the pond [:$]).

I'd also agree that a basic chicken main should be on all menus. Mrs. mdvipond likes neither hake nor lamb, so I daren't tell her what folk think of the vol-au-vent...

Makes sense to me as it caters for those that do not eat red meat, and those that do not eat Beef or Pork for religious reasons. I dont eat any meat bar Chicken, and i dont eat fish either (Gosh! im fussy!)

If they could do a nice Chicken breast with roast potatoes, stuffing, gravy and veg - i would be very happy!!

Go for it!! As i said, i always eat in the CH with the intention of having a lite bite on board - and often have half the menu! Go for it! Your on vacation!! (holiday :))

Mrs. mdvipond likes neither hake nor lamb, so I daren't tell her what folk think of the vol-au-vent...

I would definately suggest the Clubhouse for eating then, then the Missus can have a lite bite and pudding onboard - oh, and the wine :)

Wow Highfly. Judging by the number of posts you have made on this thread, and your preference for eating main meals twice, you must really like your food. Are you the size of the side of a house? ;)I'm looking forward to finding out at the next social.[:w]

Another vote for eating in the Clubhouse from me. The state of UC food is plain depressing, particularly when you read the various Book the Cook threads in the SQ forum on FlyerTalk -- a culinary experience that is a quantum leap ahead of the VS product.
