You can actually do either.

You can only get a mileage flight direct to LAS, SFO or LAX. So if there aren't any mileage tickets on the LGW-LAS route, you'd have to cover the internal flight from SFO/LAX yourself. Having said that, VS will more than happliy help you out with HP (America West) flights or other alternatives.

Having said that, there's nothing stopping you checking out the airlines serving LAS yourself before speaking with VS, to make sure you're getting the best possible deal.

On the recent V-Flyer Vegas jaunt, I shopped around for HP flights, but booking through VS was the cheapest way to do it.

Plus, of course, they took my FC details for the booking and my points appeared very quickly after the flight. (not many, but every little helps [8D];) )

You can get some real cheap flights from SFO to LAS and the flight is so short, I wouldn't worry about using miles or being in a premium cabin. America West (HP/US) and Southwest fly seem to fly almost every second now to LAS. Happy hunting...
