just had our comfirmation letter this morning for Barbados this year,:D and I have spent a week like a lot of people, checking the reviews of the hotels on the internet and trying to make sure its right for us and the kids( nice location and beach and not to lively and plenty to do etc etc) you can look for ever! We liked the look of the Bougainvillea Beach Resort...... great sorted!!..... got it booked.... done!
Then on a separate letter with the confirmation it says "building work is being carried out next to hotel and the hotel assures us that there will be only minimal disturbance" [:0]aaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrr NOT ON MY HOLIDAY!! No one said anything when we booked it!! So back to square one!!!......and after I spent so long looking for the perfect resort my wife was very unhappy! [:(!]
Finally decided on Settlers Beach Villa Hotel and then spent 40 minutes on the phone getting it changed and ended up being another £657 out of pocket.....BETTER BE GOOD!!![:?]
Just be careful and double check all your paperwork!!!

Regards
Dave

An important lesson for the traveler, Dave: leave nothing to chance! Glad you have it all sorted -- finally.

Had exactly the same thing happen on my VH to BGI, seems the building wor is common there. Fortunately, it was really no big deal, certainly heard no noise or anything from the rooms, but the mere mention of 'building work' at the hotel always evokes panic after you have forked out the pennies for your hols.

Hope it all turns out ok Dave :)

Hi Dave

We went to Barbados September 04 and stayed at the Bougainvillea. It was fabulous, shame about the building work they are doing now. We were at the hotel when hurricaine Ivan decided to pass by and the staff were amazing and made sure we had everything we needed in case the worst happened (thankfully it didn't)
The hotel you have picked sounds fab according to reviews on Tripadvisor.com and sounds like its on the West Coast which is much calmer than the beach at the Bougainvillea.

Recommendations
Hire a car and explore
Have lunch at The Roundhouse restaurant at Bathsheba - spectacular view
Go to the Deli in Holetown - can't remember the name but the cakes are to die for
Go to the wildlife reserve but don't expect the monkeys to turn up, we waited and waited...
Do the 4x4 thing
Do the Friday night Oistins fish fry - very entertaining dancing from the locals and delicious fish.

Hope this helps. Have a fab trip [y]

Do the Friday night Oistins fish fry - very entertaining dancing from the locals and delicious fish. maybe a bit late for the kids, but they would not be out of place there

Give the "rum party" cruise boats a very very wide berth, especially the "Pirate boat" - Chav heaven[:$][xx(][:$]

L2H - I was in BGI at the same time! (Over at the Turtle Beach Hotel with ration packs)

My recommendation has to be to pick up a rum cake. I bought a load to take back to the office with me as they were divine. I bought the Bacardi ones and the sponge is damp as its so saturated with rum - delicious!!

That is just not on highfly! Bad girl[V] Here I am, using all my will power, eating my meagre lunch of a green salad (anything green which doesn't have meat or sugar in makes me[:$]), and you bring up delicious, moist rum cake. Noooooooo!

PS - Do not even think about telling me what you are having for lunch. You are 25 - I can guess it is high in fat or calories or both[:(!]

Hahahaha

Lunch today was Chicken & Leek soup! Would be nice and healthy if it wasnt for the fact that i had two large bowls of it with a whole Ciabatta - followed by a Mars bar! (Im making the most of the last years of my youth before i get middle age spread)

Seriously though, those Rum cakes are divine!!

You can buy them online here ... so there you go, get ordering ... and get back to that Green salad :)

(sorry to Dave for going OT .. but food is always a good topic .. ooh ... Topic Mmm.....)

Hi,
Thanks from the reply and advice its a great help[^]i'll print this off and take it with us when we go.
we always end up going to orlando most years and never have a bad time you know what your getting sun and fun and the mouse and co of course.......

i see your a Tripadvisor.com person like me.
you do have to read these trip reports to get some sort of idea of what the hotel is like cross checking what virgin say and what real poeple say,i must of checked the whole of Barbados and the carribbean my fav is the one some chap left 1 star and every one left 4 or 5, he went on for half a page and finaly said there was to many kids in the hotel (sounds like a nice family hotel to me )its a shame about the Bougainvillea Beach Resort...... but i will will keep a look for it in the future but i think the Settlers Beach Hotel sounds and looks great place to go

regards

Dave

Did see the little monkey chaps once, last time we were there it was tortoise mating season, you wouldn't believe the row they make [:0][:I]:D

Oh i would! When i was in Busch Gardens last March the giant tortoises started relations infront of us (had my 7 year old cousin with me at the time - and he thought it was ver amusing) We admittedly captured it on tape for prosperity!!

Presumably for quite long time too? I've never stood around watching mating totoises, so am very pleased to say I don't know.
