Voted B in the end (EGG I'm on your bus this time - you're not the only B in the village). For me, C was a non-starter, shouldn't have had any expectation of UC food whereas the other 2 should. Making assumptions, but I guess most leisure travellers try for Z whereas most business people would go for J for flexibility. As such, I think the meal is probably far more significant as part of the overall experience for the leisure traveller.
I regularly travel the west coast mainline on a fully flexible first class ticket but am very jaded with the food, most of the time I don't bother. But you can tell the people who've "splashed out" on a discounted fare a mile away, and they're mostly delighted by it. Only problem with this comparision is that there is no competition on the route, if there was might I change to an operator with better food? Probably not, I'm more likely to be influenced by convenience of timing than anything else.
