Not sure if HNL would be profitable as not much biz traffic there apparently (why no one else does it!). Used to go there a lot in 80"s 
CO used to do HNL - LGW via DEN with a DC10. Did it once back from HNL in J, also did the DEN to LGW bit once. This aircraft used to have much smaller F and J cabins.
Still maybe they could do it from LGW, especially as they are rumoured to be basing a A346 there? Maybe a stopover in SFO or YVR would work. Don't believe any other airline flies from HNL to anywhere in Europe? Must be some scope for traffic from there for Hawaiian residents trying to get to Europe.

I need to go to Honolulu ideally from LHR or LGW in October so if you could get a fully working route up and running by August so I can book my tickets I'd be very grateful. Happy to fly in whatever class you provide.

I dobt that this will be happening as the plan is for LHR to become an all airbus base eventually where as LGW and MAN will see the 747's
I have often wondered about HNL but as a connection to SFO as has been suggested here- do VH offer it is a destination?? But if it was to route SFO this would mean it would have to be an LHR service and as a b+s/honeymoon route HNL would be better suited to LGW...maybe a link up with Virgin America is the only way- if they ever ever get off the ground!
As for GIG- I believe that the UK government have just struck a deal with the BRazilians for another 2 carriers to operate a LON-GIG. TAM are the chosen BRazilian carrier- so its between VS and BD for the new route I guess- this of course can be always used to extend to EZE.

Well, with there already being a Star Alliance carrier (Varig) doing LON-GIG, I'd be in favour of VS adding this to their route network!

LON-HNL problem would be crew duty periods... 2 x crews would be required losing 18 revenue seats less to sell. I think a A345 may just make it but limited cargo and less seats.. lessn seats means more £££££ to buy a ticket shame really.... personally Id like to see some South American routes!! bring on the Salsa, Corona and nachos
I wouldn't mind VS competing with BA on the LHR-GIG/GRU-EZE route. Whenever I do this with BA the loads seem to be reasonable but it would take some investment I guess. It is a shame that there is no direct LHR-EZE flight (BA used to do LGW-EZE a few years back -- that was a long flight!).

GIG would be my bet as a possible new route, as BC noted. VS were essential in gaining cooperation between the UK and Brazil and they are already operating frequent charter flights there. It would probably be only a small and easy step to get GIG added as a full-time route.
Anyone else see the news today that Air NZ will be flying Auckland-Honolulu-London? Apparently because their passengers complain about the security in LAX ... isn't Hawaii subject to the same security?

They'd then have a very good MŽxican network all on 1 flight- including the CUN weddings/holidays market.
People looking for a more historical part of MŽxico would be flying to MID.
It would also steal a lot of MID's citizens who go to London via MEX on BA (they avoid the USA due to visas).
This would be a very profitable route for VS.

There were rumours of HNL before HKG, but it doesn't gain NZ anything to route via HNL.
NZ seem to have invested a lot of money and effort into improving the transit experience on NZ1/2 through LAX since the US suspended/withdrew Transit Without Visa, in any case - from the new lounge (which can be used by Business Class pax in transit), to a dedicated transit lounge with complimentary refreshments for Premium and Economy passengers. Pax going through the transit facility don't have to reclaim bags, too.
Interestingly, it looks like the existing AKL-HKG service operated on the 777 will continue to run, even once the AKL-HKG-LHR service starts up as well.

Mike do you have a source for a double daily HKG-AKL for NZ? I don't think that is correct as the 777 that is moving to AKL-HKG will then be moved to start AKL-PVG in October once the 747 is used on AKL-HKG-LHR.
HNL with regards to NZ is rumoured to be dropped with the extra a/c capacity going elsewhere. Latest rumour for NZ is Vancouver either direct from AKL or if they decide to keep HNL then via HNL.
