We Do know who upgrades are to a certain degree. There are lots of things that CSS's know that other crew do not know about customer infomation codes. As for a customer reading information about customers the crew on that flight should be told beacause that information is all data protected and should not be on public display



We seemed to have strayed a bit from the steak question .... :)

VITB your last 2 posts seem to contradict slightly...[?]

What I saw was hand written on to a photocopied grid and not the usual long computer printed list I have frequently seen crew members referring to.

I stand to be corrected but I don't think DPA would apply to that?

In July 2001 I flew to IAD and was given an upgrade from PE to UC at check in because of a full flight...... when it came to ordering our meal we were both very politely informed that we may not get our first choice if there were insufficient meals because we had been upgraded.. although as it happened we did..... I was more than happy with that... it made perfect sense to me ..... I actually gave the member of crew a 'Rave Review' I think it was called at the time ? for her outstanding service on that flight.

Does it really matter that the crew know who is in what fare class or who has paid what ?? They are all professional people in the way they do their job (well mostly :D) and I would guess that most of them are not the slightest bit interested in what you have paid, some may not even have a jot of an idea what 'J' 'D' 'Z' or 'G' actually equate to in monatary terms anyway.

Interesting point Mark - I have spent hours explaining how fare codes work to VS FAs whilst sat at the bar.... of course they could have been humouring me ...

Going back on thread id vote for C as they are the most loyal!!
(I obviously missed this thread first time out!)

In terms of service - I've been op uped more times than I've paid for Z!! and I'm happy to say I received no difference in service as I would expect - but to be fair at the end of the day if you have 45 UC pax most people are reasonable and someone would happily take a second choice myself included!!

The point I was trying to make was, unless the information were meant to be used in some respect, why should the crew even know what fare class the seat was booked under?

Whilst I do not wish to disrespect any cabin crew (because you're all fabulous [y]), who knows what the more "unprofessional" staff member might do with the info. It seems to me that, to ensure the same quality of service to all passengers in the class, the information is surplus to requirements!

Crew no longer receive a list of who is upgraded, or what fare class they are in. TBH, a lot of crew have little understanding of fare classes, just like the general public.

Well there used to be a list, but that has been removed. However, it doesn't stop ground staff indicating to crew who has been shifted up, there is the internal tool for adding special notes which may give clues to the FSM.

As a relative newbie to this site (I've lurked for a while though) I would have voted for "B", only because I have noticed comments that Virgin monitor this site for feedback and I shall be a "category B" passenger on VS043 next week - and I'm hoping to get the steak (I hear we get real cuttlery too now!)

Wow talk about pulling a thread out from the past.

Of course the funny thing to me is it talks about steaks..in UC...no such thing..now it should be who would get the last sausage [:p]

Anyways.... I have mellowed slightly on my postion, I now think it should be me, as I only fly trans Atlantic a couple of times a year so my flight should be special [:p]

VITB say's "There are lots of things that CSS's know that other crew do not know about customer infomation codes." Not sure i'd agree, this info is on the passenger manifest (a legally required document), available to all crew members for various reasons, as distributed by the FSM. Upgrades lists are now no longer provided as company policy.

Never had steak on a plane. But given it's not that long since metal cutlery was returned, I wouldn't want to try with plastic.

On the original question, Divide it 3 ways, divide a lamb and chicken meal and say they are getting a special mixed grill as designated VIP pax. Should keep all 3 happy.[y]

As the airlines ow seem to be stocking pretty blunt metal knives there are some that give out the plastic knives with meat dishes as they cut better.

007 is Red - they had that many 'Frequent Flyers' they had to extend out to 006.

There are other ranges too.
