hmvs_dog, you raise a very good perspective. FC Red being the tier that keeps those once or twice yearly flyers loyal to Virgin. What did you think of Richards proposal that Red members should have to achieve a small number of tier points a year (say 4, thats one return Y flight) to keep the tier?

However I think I would be seriously miffed if I couldn't get reward availability when I wanted it simply because someone who had never flown VS had created an account with the sole purpose of racking up miles for multiple reward seats [:(!]

I think Richard's proposal is very valid and something which Virgin should seriously consider. In keeping with what HL has said (see above), partner miles don't actually give you that many miles when compared to taking flights. And for my money, that's absolutely correct. The real rewards should come for people who use the airline, but Virgin have done something very right here, in not keeping the rewards just for those who are able (be it through work or pleasure) to attain them through flights alone. However you look at it, it's almost certainly going to take the accural of miles through flights, an absolute necessity if you want a reward flight!

So with Richard's plan, the average Red member is actively encouraged to use Virgin Atlantic so they can keep saving towards a possible reward flight. It would certainly work for me!!

I'd go further HL.

Want VS status? Fly VS. Partner activity doesn't count - no ifs, no buts.

Then there's the argument of "what if VS don't fly to my destinations? etc etc". Well... you won't be needing status on an airline that don't fly to your destinations then, will you? [:w][ii]

I 100% agree with this as I was recently sat next to a VS Au card holder in J who was in fact taking their first ever VS flight [:0] [?]

That to me is wrong and like Paul says anyway, what's the point. Why have top tier status on an airline you dont use [:?]

A couple of points.

I like the idea of having to take x number of flights before qualifying for an FC membership..however VS would hate it, they make a lot of money sells miles to other companies to give away.

However Nick raises the point of having an even more basic membership than red,I like that a lot.

The problem with having to get x number of TP's a year to qualify for a basic membership is VS itself, well actually the VS website.

In a normal year I will do two trans Atlantic flights.

If I were to book on the VS website in Y it will try an book me in an N, there by I get half the miles and half the TP's.In order to get a full earning Y fare I need to make a call..no biggee for us here in the US where we have a toll free line, but it will cost $$$ for those who have to pay to call rather than being able to select the ticket class on line.

As an FYI..the best miles per $ spent is a car rental, $25- $30 will get you 1000 miles, there is nothing that comes close to that earning power, except maybe a very cheap Z to the west coast.
