I think Richard's proposal is very valid and something which Virgin should seriously consider. In keeping with what HL has said (see above), partner miles don't actually give you that many miles when compared to taking flights. And for my money, that's absolutely correct. The real rewards should come for people who use the airline, but Virgin have done something very right here, in not keeping the rewards just for those who are able (be it through work or pleasure) to attain them through flights alone. However you look at it, it's almost certainly going to take the accural of miles through flights, an absolute necessity if you want a reward flight!
So with Richard's plan, the average Red member is actively encouraged to use Virgin Atlantic so they can keep saving towards a possible reward flight. It would certainly work for me!!
