Hello All,

I had a question that I thought I would throw to the passengers. Now I know all of you are on the 'frequent well behaved passenger' side of the aisle, but maybe you can give me your views on this subject.

THE SUBJECT:

I recently did a rather empty flight to IAD with plenty of extra seats. I was really looking forward to the flight because we were A) Over catered as we had expected to go full. So everyone was going to get their first choice of meals and I was not dreading the meal service.
B) I was looking forward to getting to interact a bit more with passengers.

During the flight, passengers ran to get their own rows of seats and quickly laid themselves across all four or two and enjoyed the vast amount of space. Now once they had done this, there were no spare seats left as everyone was laying across them. Shortly after this happened a passengers IFE became inop and as they had someone sitting next to them, I had to move the passenger. (DVD player not an option). I eventually had to ask a passenger stretched across a row of seats because it was my only option. Now the passenger who I asked to move was not happy to have to give up the seat and was really moody with me the rest of the flight. (Though he still had two seats between himself and the other passenger).

Why was it such an issue? The guy did not pay for a row of seats so he should not expect one. I understood that it was inconvinient, but no need to be rude to the crew the rest of the flight. What's your feelings?

If they get grumpy, just tell them to return to their allocated seat...

As a passenger, I or my company have paid for 1 seat. The opportunity to spread oneself out over a few can be for some a real bonus. I find it too uncomfortable.

Having said that, I would have no issue in the crew asking me to give up 1 of 3 seats for a fellow passenger, particulalry as I had a non-op screen on my way to IAD on Saturday.

The customer was out of order in my view. There is never any cause to be rude to CC, even if they have been snappy and iritable to you !

I totally agree. I would just point out to the pax that he had only paid for 1 seat and therefore you are more than in your right to ask him to move to allow you to seat another pax. It shouldn't matter if the pax you are re-seating had a faulty screen, dodgy tray table or you just felt like moving him, it is your/the FSM's right as the person in charge of the aircraft.

No argument at all on this one I don't think.

The grumpy pax was a numbskull.

The guy was an idiot - there are a lot of idiots around... [n]

We were on a flight a bit like this a few months back. It was on AA and we (husband and I) were flying in economy with a colleague. It was 2-5-2 in economy, but none of the twos were available for assignment, so I assigned husband and I an aisle and one next to it (in the middle section) and colleague an aisle immediately behind. Well in the end nobody was assigned a seat in colleague's row of 5, so as soon as the door was closed a mother and boy (probably about 9 or 10) ran to the row. The boy sits next to colleague and the mother sits on the aisle: so they have basically appropriated the 4 spare seats in that row for themselves. Ok, fair enough you may say... possession is 9/10ths... BUT you would think that they could leave our poor colleague one spare seat next to him (and only take 3 seats). [ii]

Life is all about 'me me me!' - many have no consideration for others [:(!]. Sorry that you had to suffer one of those...

No problems... [:)]

Somehow I would imagine that, with your job, you come across quite a few idiots and reasons for needint to vent...

How about sending everyone back to their allocated seat and blaming the pax- let him deal with the backlash for the rest of the flight!

Then it kind of screws it up for everyone, even if the others have been behaving themselves.

If a flight is looking kind of empty, i usually keep something personal like a coat or bag down, so as soon as the seat belt sign is turned off I can put something next to me.

I do not like to try and grab a row, just the seat next to me.

Sometimes air travel brings out the worst in people.

I think there should be a restricted area where frustrated CC can vent and get therapy from dealing with those fellow passengers who are grumpy gits.

I was on an SQ flight a couple of years back - just a little hopper flight from Thailand to Singapore. The plane had almost nobody on it and so me and my mate thought we could grab a couple of seats each (to be honest, we could have grabbed a couple of hundred seats each!!) but the CC said we musnt move and when my mate still did (I know, I know, naughty naughty) got a bit stroppy! We figured they must have a company policy and so were just sticking to it. We survived the experience and in the end - the CC are in charge and so their instructions should be followed. In the case above - you should have a pax shaped punchbag (other threads could contibute clothing ideas im sure!) and when pax drive you mad, head to the punchbag zone and give it hell!

GG

The guy was out of order[V][V]

The encounter serves to remind us all how sometimes the 'survival' instinct takes over rational actions and can make us too blinkered and selfish to see reason. Being on the train to London in the rush hour is so similar - 'it's MY seat your sitting in!'

Hope said person is now reflecting on how he reacted, or perhaps he thinks the whole world has got it in for him

Keep up your excellent work

Completely agree. It is AMAZING how quickly many people will loose any civilisation and become animals again... [ii]

Cracking idea and certainly would be fun to watch 'Moron Pax' squirm in front of everyone?[}:)][}:)]
