I'm new to the forum so I'd just like to say hi to everyone out there, I've been browsing around and you all seem to really know your stuff.

I'm going to be flying in a few weeks out of LHR (to EWR) on my honeymoon. At the moment I'm still a lowly Red Tier frequent flyer and I have about 17,000 miles in my account..the fare that I bought the tickets with is a milesplusmoney. Anyway, I'm just wondering if there are any perks anyone's experienced after informing the people at check-in or the crew that you're on your honeymoon? I'm not really hoping for a free upgrade but maybe a discount (though I doubt it on an already discounted economy fare), or even just a little bottle of champagne? :D I certainly don't expect anything free but what's the likelihood of being able to purchase an upgrade? (Flight number is VS017)
Apologies if I've asked any really stupid questions. I am but a lowly ignoramus in this forum.

Anyway, a little more about me, I'm 21 so I haven't been flying on my own for very long, but when I was 17 I decided to fly to London on my own and chose Virgin & ever since then I've always flown with them...except once, when I flew with BA because they had the cheapest fare available. Didn't think they were bad at all, but just not as...I don't know...fun as Virgin.

Anyway, hello out there!

Congratulations on your nuptials Yellow_Stars. Although I am on my second marriage (some of us are stupid I know). We flew BA[:(] when we got married 20! years ago and I mentioned that we were on our honeymoon at check-in and we were treated very nicely by the BA crew, even down to a full-size bottle of champagne as we were getting off the plane (it went down very nicely sitting on Miami Beach :D) So I say go for it, drop it into the conversation at check-in and you never know. The CC on VA ARE a lot more fun then BA crew, so your flight should go well. Have a happy honeymoon.

Hi Yellowstars and welcome to V-Flyer:D

glad you have found the site useful

anyone's experienced after informing the people at check-in or the crew that you're on your honeymoon?

As regards to your question about "honeymoon", you may care to look at this thread where you will see the subject has come up before - a search will reveal a few other associated topics too.

You will not be the first to ask;)

The upgrade guide here will tell you the ins and outs of upgrades.

Hope that is of help - I really do hope your wedding day goes off well and that your honeymoon flight makes you continue to use VS - it certainly captured Mrs Buns and myself;)

all the best

Welcome, yellow_stars :D[y]

If you want to guarantee a supply of bubbly, VS do offer several options for gifts to be delivered onboard. through their pre-order service.

Bottles of Moet, cakes, etc... Might be worth a call in advance ;)

(Good call on BA, too [y])

Thanks! I may mention it...I just don't want to annoy anyone and don't want them to think I'm lying just to get something for free!

There was someone else on here talking about a celebrity decorator's take on BA's clubhouse & described it as 'drab' in comparison to VA's. That's exactly how I feel about everything about the two airlines when compared. ;)

Thanks for your reply, I did read that post but it was more geared toward upgrades rather than honeymoon 'perks' in general so I thought I'd throw my question out there. :) Sorry if it seemed redundant!

However I didn't see the upgrade guide so I will have a look at that. Thanks again!

I think I've heard about that, but I was hoping for free stuff! Cheeky, I know, lol. :D

No problem with that strategy - some you win, some you lose ;)

I'll just leave you with something someone once told me - "hope can lead to disappointment, cash leads to guaranteed satisfaction" :D.

(I promise it wasn't as dodgy as it may sound! ;))

Hi

We flew VS on our honeymoon from MAN to MCO, however it was when the VS flight was being operated by another operator (sorry can't remember the name)but with Virgin crew.

Our travel agent had made notes on our booking that we were on honey moon so when we checked in they already knew. We were given seats in row 1 which weren't PE or even UC but had the extra leg room at the front and we got a bottle of champagne which was a nice touch.

Definitely tell either the check in agent or the virgin rep who will be standing around the queues as you never know.

Maybe you might have been better booking with ba. My fiances sister in law works for them and she reckons they would upgrade you for your honeymoon - she says hardly anyone asks! She works on the ground tho - as opposed to the airline. Didn't want to risk taking her word for it myself so have booked UC on virgin. But this is my second honeymoon, so it's probably more affordable for me, being a lot older the second time round.

Where are you going for your honeymoon? Tell as many people as possible that you have just got married - hotel, restaurants etc - and you probably will get lots of free champagne and stuff.

That was moi :) Good ole Lawrence!

My take on the subject would be to either call Flying Club, or speak to VS staff on the day and say that you are on your Honeymoon and want to upgrade to Upper but you are willing to pay or use miles, what are your chances. That way you are not asking for anything for free so to speak. As you bought your tickets using MpM it may be that they are not upgradeable using cash or miles, so that could be another hurdle altogether, but its certainly worth asking. Im sure they are much more likely to want to help you if they see you are genuine nad happy to pay for an upgrade rather than trying to chance it with the old 'were on our honeymoon' line - which incidentally was one of the pointers for a great ad campaign VS ran a while back with an oddly matched couple - anyone got the images per chance?

Best of luck to you with getting the upgrade, and regardless, have a fantastic trip and prelude to married bliss :)

I'll second Sarah. Get a "friend" to call the FC line or VS Customer Services and tell them which flight you will be on, and that it's your honeymoon, and see if VS can work their magic.

Many moons ago, we booked a honeymoon package to the far east through Kuoni and were upgraded to SQ business on the way to Singapore. Flight back was a bum though - the very back of the bus on Thai...

Friends travelled with BA on their honeymoon two years ago and said they were awful, when they mentioned they were on their honeymoon the check in staff said so what!

To be honest, that is what I would expect (although I hope it was phrased better than that). OpUps are pretty unusual and, as the name suggests, are only offered when operational requirments make them unavoidable. If there was no requirment to upgrade on the flight your friends booked, then why should the airline spend lots of money moveing them to the front? And if the airline were looking for upgrades why would they update a married couple in preference to a very frequent flyer? Sorry, but IMHO, if you want to be at the front then buy a J/F ticket. If you get and OpUp, remeber you are really lucky. If you don't get one, well that's life.

For any perks, mention it to the crew. They can do more for you than ground staff in terms of champagne etc. You can also contact res and they can organise things like that for onboard.

Ask the ground staff about availability for an upgrade on the day, but you wont be op-up'd.

I completely agree with you, they shouldn't be expected.

I was just meaning I personally wouldn't try BA, my own flight with VA on my honeymoon was fab whereas my mates experience with BA was rubbish!

I've always felt that where possible, Virgin will try their best to do something when somebody is celebrating something on a flight even if it was just an announcement etc

I've been on flights where they have announced somebodys birthday and have always thought it was a nice touch, (or its me being a sap!):D
