A lot of snow was dumped here in Washington between about 3 and 6am. Reagan National, La Guardia and Newark are reportedly closed this morning. About 2000 flights have been cancelled.

As Chris said, the storm started much later than they forecasted so it will continue in the NY & Boston areas later into today than the 6am end they originally envisaged.

I never heard it ending at 6am, but anyway, yeah, there's a lot of snow...

From FAA:

Due to SNOW, the Newark International Airport (EWR) was closed as of Feb 12 at 09:25 AM EST. The date/time when the airport is expected to reopen is not known.

Due to SNOW, the John F Kennedy International Airport (JFK) was closed as of Feb 12 at 11:05 AM EST. The date/time when the airport is expected to reopen is not known.

Due to SNOW, the La Guardia Airport (LGA) was closed as of Feb 12 at 09:29 AM EST. The date/time when the airport is expected to reopen is not known.

I think BOS and IAD are still open..

Just see the news report on the BBC

This is serious snow[:0][:0]

Hope all those hoping to travel in the next few days have warm places to stay as it looks very much travel will be a bit of a no-no

As I drove back from NJ to my Hotel in Long Island they announced that this was the most snow since records began - 26.4" in Central Park I think they said. Driving back was certainly interesting but only took twice as long as expected! They closed the lower bridge on George Washington but most routes were reasonably well cleared.

This snow storm is not as bad ( at the moment ) as January 22nd 2005 when Newark, JFK, LaGuardia, Logan and Dulles were all shut down; it either happens in january or february on the east coast- the only good thing to come out of it is of course airlines offering free flights if you wait another day for your flight![^]

Just got a telex at work about an hour ago, which basically said:

"Do not send ANY passengers to CVG for connecting flights to ANY northeastern airport. They will be stranded in CVG. Due to the volume of diverted flights, cancelled flights, and out of position aircraft, CVG currently has no available hotel rooms. Thanks."

US Airways at the airport I work at was only able to dispatch one aircraft to PHL all day- the 0630 service actually departed around 1430. Everything is just a mess- we got a list of about 40 flights that are being ferried to get aircraft in usable positions, because everything is so screwed up.

We share op's frequencies with a couple european cargo airlines, and were fortunate enough to whitness a conversation this afternoon between a european cargo flight and their operations in New York. Apparently they thought they would be landing at JFK, only to find that JFK had like 2 feet of snow. The rather unhappy captain finally agreed to divert to Washington, Dulles after he burned 6,000 pounds of fuel in a holding pattern. Apparently nobody told him it was supposed to snow :D

In other news, I have no school tomorrow.

Everything seems to be cleared now, and I'm hearing the usual EWR traffic (although less than usual) coming over my house. No comment from VS regarding tomorrow's flights, I wouldn't be surprised to hear of some delays though.

And here's me..trapped in Pittsburgh--again (last time January blizzard '05). All eastern seaboard aiprorts closed for most of the day. United just cancelled all flights, U.S Air cancelled most and made it impossible to rebook unless one stood in line for two hours.

Two feet of snow reported in New York, Ct and RI,so impossible to fly in anywhere near to Boston. Seems to have been a lot of "pre-cancel" based just on weather report rather than actual condtion. Can't get a flight out until midday tomorrow, and not well pleased!

Just had a VM from VS. Seems they've changed VS04 to what LOOKS like an LGW 744 config. If so I'm guessing there'll be some disgruntled UC flyers tonight. Funnily I OLCIed seconds after 19:30 last night... ;). Will keep you posted.

I'm guessing that's because some aircraft have been stranded over here?

I'm wondering on that - seems more likely they repositioned a Sunshine State flight to pickup the NY? Wonder if there are delays shown on LGW routings?

Finally back...took 24 hours and having to steel myself not to volunteer for all those free flights on offer as all overbooked. First flight out of Pburgh delayed due to de-icing, so missed connection at Reagan and then had to jog around trying to get as close as I could to Boston. Ironically, a bright sunny SWesterly wind, day so fluffy snow immediately squashed, making the day before seem silly, although icy runways still a problem.

HUGE lines everywhere, unclaimed luggage spilling off carousels and no one grabbing the somewhat frantic offers for volunteers. US Airways were hopeless in terms of re-booking but I noted a determinedly gracious approach from agents--a great difference from my experience last year in the Jan blizzard when grounded in Pburgh--surly the only operative norm for the then seriously-in-danger-of layoffs ground crew on Chapter 11 US Air. Flight crew also gracious, doling out double peanuts and refills on beverages.

Now that's quite enough for winter!

Back on a 747 and all relatively well barring the usual luggage debacle at LHR...
